The group’s chatter picked up a bit more as they all made their way to the flimsy doors that lead back into the waiting room, and through it as well, into the lobby with the muted, striped carpet that lead right to the receptionist.

“A lot to look forward to with these changes, right?” Tern asked the blonde [[what is she wearing?]] who walked out next to him.

She nodded back with sarcasm, “Oh, don’t you know it.”

“Unbelievable, mostly,” he continued.

“But how do they get away with it?” she asked. “Those ballot questions were a joke.”

Tern replied, “I honestly have no idea. It’s like our legal system has slipped so far that this is expected.”

“The illusion of choice. Right before they fuck you like they’ve planned the whole time.”

“But I want to know who gets off on this anyway?”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Who gets off on shoving their fists down every one else’s throats?”

“Those people who we supposedly elected. They get rewarded for change, even if it’s a step backward. They hock it as progress.”

“But what is their reward?”

“Re-election, most likely. And a nice power trip and ego stroking while their term lasts.”

Tern nodded, “Fair enough.”

The two stood for a moment, looking around to the other people in the lobby who hadn’t walked out yet.

“My name is Tern,” he said, and offered his hand and smile.

“Hi, Tern. My name is Christy.” She shook his hand with her cool, small hand. Her smile made his stomach squirm, in a way he hadn’t known for a long time.

“Well, Christy, would you like to grab some brunch? I didn’t have time to eat before the meeting.”

“I would like to,”she replied. “I only had a grapefruit, and I could use something more substantial.”

He motioned toward the door, and she lead him out of the BEI office. The brisk air tingled on his face as he got his bearings.

“I think there’s a decent place a few blocks this way,” Christy nodded to the east, away from the direction Tern had originally come.

“Are you thinking of The Risen Sun?”

“Sure am.”

“I love that place for brunch. Lead on.”

She gave him a smile and they made their way onward.
